Meet our management team

Dan Rosensweig

President & Chief Executive Officer

In 2010, Dan Rosensweig joined Chegg with a vision to transform the popular textbook rental service into a leading provider of digital learning services. By leveraging technology, mobility, and connected networks, Chegg has now become a 24/7 learning partner by offering a suite of high-quality, low-cost, personalized and on-demand educational resources that help students maximize the return on their investment in education and support them on their journey from learning to earning.

As Chairman and CEO of Chegg, Dan commits the company to fulfill its mission – “always put students first” – by not only helping them succeed but also by helping them thrive. Under Dan’s direction, Chegg has become the always-on, trusted, and affordable source of knowledge, guidance, and inspiration, helping learners achieve their educational and career goals.

Prior to Chegg, Dan served as CEO of Guitar Hero, COO of Yahoo!, and CEO of ZDNet. Dan received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva, New York. When Dan isn’t attending a Springsteen concert or enjoying quality time with his wife and two daughters, he serves as a Colgate University Emeritus Trustee, and sits on the Board of Directors for Adobe Systems, Inc., Rent-the-Runway, and the Advisory Board of the nonprofit DonorsChoose.org. Dan also serves as a Senior Advisor for TPG Growth Ventures and an Advisor to both Kleiner Perkins and Bond Capital.

Andrew Brown

Chief Financial Officer

As CFO of Chegg, Andy’s goal is to help drive the financial performance of the company. Andy has over 25 years of experience in the financial sector, over 10 of which he’s spent as CFO of three public companies, most recently with Palm, Inc. Andy’s proven ability to help build organizations, impressive track record in high growth environments and significant experience in the consumer technology space make him a great fit for Chegg and will help continue the company’s growth. Andy earned his Bachelor of Science in accounting from Eastern Illinois University, where he serves on the Business School advisory board. He lives in the Bay Area with his wife, has two children in college and when he’s not in the office, he enjoys spending time with his family. When time permits, you will see him going wheel-to-wheel with other competitors, racing his formula car in the West Coast Formula Car Challenge Series!

Esther Lem

Chief Marketing Officer

Esther serves as the Chief Marketing Officer driving all online and offline marketing and communications initiatives at Chegg, with an emphasis on consumer interest and rental behavior. Previously, Esther was the V.P. for Unilever’s Global Hair Category, working on various brands including Dove and Axe. Her prior role at Unilever was as Vice President, brand development for deodorants for Unilever in North America, where she presided over one of the biggest men’s personal care launches in U.S. history. In 2000, Lem came to the U.S., where she and other Unilever marketing executives focused squarely on the young male. Esther has been honored with numerous industry awards including Ad Age’s women to Watch, Marketer of the Year and multiple marketing and advertising awards.

Heather Hatlo Porter

Chief Communications Officer

Heather is Chegg’s Chief Communications Officer, leading all internal and external communications efforts for the company. Previously, as VP of Marketing, she was responsible for building Chegg’s brand narrative, creating innovative campaigns with major influencers, and spearheading cause-marketing efforts. Heather’s passion for Chegg’s mission, and her work with education-focused non-profits, inspired her to help launch the Chegg Foundation in 2013, where she was the President of the Board of Directors during the six years the Foundation remained active. She recently oversaw the transition of the Chegg Foundation to Chegg.org, where she now sits on the Advisory Board. Chegg.org is the new social impact, grant-giving and advocacy arm of Chegg, which has elevated the student voice through policy efforts such as the “Unlocking The American Dream” student debt policy report. Heather is deeply passionate about her family and community. When she is not focused on putting students first at Chegg, she is focused on her own little students, her two sons. Outside the office she can be found volunteering with local non-profits, serving on the board of her sons’ elementary school, or cheering at the ice rink for her kids as a devoted hockey mom.

Nathan Schultz

President, Learning Services

As Chegg’s President of Learning Services, Nathan is responsible for student achievement, overseeing all aspects of Chegg’s self-directed learning tools, which includes content development and publisher relations. Nathan has dedicated his career to putting students first and representing their interests within the world of educational publishing, having served at Bowker, Pearson, and Jones & Bartlett prior to joining Chegg. Nathan attended Elon University in North Carolina, receiving his BA in History and English and continued his education at Stevens Institute of Technology, in New Jersey. In his spare time, Nathan enjoys traveling and tearing up the outdoor trails.

Debra Thompson

Chief People Officer

Debra Thompson serves as our Chief People Officer since March 2020. Previously she served as Chegg’s Vice President of Total Rewards from April 2019 through March 2020 and as a Director of Total Rewards from April 2013 to April 2019. Prior to Chegg, Debra served as a Director of Compensation, Benefits and HR Operations at Amyris Inc. Ms. Thompson held various management positions at RMS, Inc., CNET Networks and Lucent Technologies (Octel Communications). Debra holds a B.S. in Business Administration, Personnel Administration/Industrial Relations from California State University East Bay – College of Business and Economics.

Woodie Dixon, Jr.

General Counsel

Woodie Dixon, Jr. joined Chegg as General Counsel in September 2020, overseeing all legal and compliance matters. Prior to joining Chegg, he served as the General Counsel and Senior Vice President of Business Affairs for the Pac-12 Conference, where he oversaw all legal affairs and business administration. Dixon left his mark through negotiating a $3 billion media rights agreement with ESPN/FOX, the creation of Pac-12 Networks and Pac-12 Enterprises, the expansion of the Pac-10 to the Pac-12 (adding the University of Colorado and the University of Utah), and launching international collegiate competitions. Dixon now translates his deep understanding of the student-athlete to putting students first in our work at Chegg.

From 2004-10, he served as General Counsel for the Kansas City Chiefs. Prior to that, he worked for the National Football League, Sidley & Austin LLP and Dorsey & Whitney, handling a myriad of corporate legal matters. Dixon obtained his JD from Harvard Law School, a MS in Sport Management from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and a BA in History from Amherst College.

Dixon currently serves as a member of the Fritz Pollard Alliance Board, USA Football Board, the Sports Lawyers Association Board, American Bar Association Sports Advisory Committee, and Arizona State University Sports Law and Business Advisory Board.

John Fillmore

President, Chegg Skills

John Fillmore became President of Chegg Skills in September 2020 and previously served as our Chief Strategy Officer, Chief Business Officer, Chief of Business Operations, and was Chegg’s Business Leader for Required Materials. Prior to Chegg, Fillmore’s experience included service at Bain & Company, a management consulting firm, and as Chief Deputy Director for the Office of Planning and Research under then-California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, where he focused on education and economic development. Fillmore holds a B.S. from the University of Oregon Robert D. Clark Honors College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Lauren Glotzer

Chief Strategy Officer

Lauren Glotzer became our Chief Strategy Officer in April 2021. Prior to joining Chegg, she was the Executive Vice President, Television Strategy & Operations at SPE. During that time, she drove the growth strategies that resulted in the acquisitions of Silvergate Media and Pure Flix. In addition to her work in television strategy, Lauren oversaw the management of the Pure Flix SVOD service.

Before that role, Lauren spent 11 years in the SPE Corporate Development team, six of those years as its leader. Throughout her tenure at SPE, Lauren’s responsibilities have spanned corporate and divisional strategy, M&A, new business development, and support for investor and board communications. In that time, Lauren has worked across all areas of the business, including film production and distribution, television production and distribution, and media networks.

Prior to joining SPE, Lauren spent five years in strategy and corporate development for UK cable company ntl:Telewest (now Virgin Media) in London and Hampshire. Her background also includes business development in the EMEA region for mobile middleware provider AvantGo and strategy consulting for Braxton Associates in London. Lauren started her career as a consultant at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu in New York and Paris.

Lauren holds an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France and a BA in Philosophy from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. She lives in New York with her husband and two daughters.

Sarah Bond

Corporate Vice President, Game Creator Experience & Ecosystem, Microsoft

Sarah Bond brings extensive experience building industry-shaping technology partnerships and has served on our board of directors since December 2020. Ms. Bond serves as a Corporate Vice President of Gaming Ecosystem at Microsoft Corporation since June 2020 and as the Corporate Vice President of Gaming Partnerships and Business Development from April 2017 to June 2020. Previously, Ms. Bond served as the Senior Vice President of Emerging Businesses at T-Mobile USA Inc. from September 2015 to April 2017 and as the Vice President of Strategy and Business Development from August 2013 to September 2015, and Chief of Staff to the CEO from March 2011 to July 2013. Ms. Bond started her career as an Associate Partner at McKinsey & Company from September 2006 to March 2011. Ms. Bond currently serves on the Board of Directors of Zuora Inc. Ms. Bond holds a B.A. in economics from Yale University and an M.B.A from Harvard Business School.

Renee Budig

Board Member, iRhythm Technologies, Inc.

Ms. Budig brings extensive financial operations experience and has served on our board of directors since November 2015. From September 2012 to January 2021, Ms. Budig served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of ViacomCBS Streaming, a division of ViacomCBS Inc. (formerly CBS Interactive, a division of CBS Inc.), an online content network for information and entertainment, and from 2010 to September 1012, Ms. Budig served as Chief Financial Officer of Hightail, Inc. (formerly branded YouSendIt and acquired by OpenText), a cloud service that allowed users to send, receive, digitally sign and synchronize files. From 2006 to 2010, Ms. Budig was the Vice President of Finance at Netflix, Inc., a multinational provider of on-demand Internet streaming media. Ms. Budig currently serves on the Board of Directors of iRhythm Technologies, Inc. Ms. Budig holds a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley. Ms. Budig is also a Certified Public Accountant.

Dr. Paul LeBlanc

President, Southern New Hampshire University

Dr. Paul LeBlanc brings extensive experience in technological innovation in higher education and has served on our board of directors since July 2019. Dr. LeBlanc has served as the President of Southern New Hampshire University, a private non-profit university since 2003. Previously, Dr. LeBlanc served as the President of Marlboro College, a private liberal arts college, from 1996 to 2003. Prior to Marlboro College, Dr. Paul LeBlanc served as Director of Sixth Floor Media, a division of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company. Dr. LeBlanc holds a B.A. in English from Framingham State University, a M.A. in English Language, Literature and Letters from Boston College, and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Composition and Technology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Marne Levine

Vice President of Global Partnerships, Business and Corporate Development, Facebook

Marne Levine brings extensive experience in the policy, communication and technology fields, and has served on our board of directors since May 2013. Since February 2019, Ms. Levine has served as the Vice President of Global Partnerships, Business and Corporate Development at Facebook, Inc., a social media company. Previously, Ms. Levine served as Chief Operating Officer of Instagram from 2014 -2018 where she was responsible for helping to scale the company’s business and operations globally and turn Instagram from a beloved app into a thriving business. She joined Facebook in 2010 as Facebook’s first Vice President of Global Policy, a position she held for four years. Prior to Facebook, Ms. Levine served in the Obama Administration as Chief of Staff of the National Economic Council (NEC) at the White House and Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy. From 2006-2008, Ms. Levine was Head of Product Management for Revolution Money, an early stage start-up working on person-to-person online money transfers, which was ultimately sold to American Express. Prior to this, she served as Chief of Staff to Larry Summers, then President of Harvard University. Ms. Levine began her career in 1993 at the United States Department of Treasury under President Bill Clinton where she held a number of leadership positions. She holds a B.A. in political science and communications from Miami University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Marcela Martin

Chief Financial Officer, Squarespace

Marcela Martin brings extensive experience in the finance, tech and media industries and has served on our board of directors since September 2021. Ms. Martin has served as Chief Financial Officer at Squarespace Corporation since November 2020 and was previously the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer from January 2019 to November 2020 at Booking.com. Previously, Ms. Martin served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of National Geographic Partners from January 2016 to December 2018. From 2003 to 2007, Ms. Martin was Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Fox International Channels and Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer from 2007 to 2016. Ms. Martin currently serves on the Board of Directors of Avalara, Inc. Ms. Martin holds a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Moron, Argentina and an M.B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom.

Richard Sarnoff

Co-Chairperson

Richard Sarnoff brings his extensive experience serving in senior leadership roles and on the board of directors of media and digital technology companies. Since 2012 he has served on our board of directors, and as its Co-Chairman since July 2018. The private equity firm, Kohlberg, Kravis Roberts & Company has employed Mr. Sarnoff since 2011, first as Senior Advisor, later as Managing Director and Head of Media and Communications and most recently as Partner and Chairman of Media, Entertainment and Education Investing. Previously, Mr. Sarnoff was employed by Bertelsmann, a diversified media and services company, where he served as the Co-Chairman of Bertelsmann, Inc. from 2008 to 2011 and the President of Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments from 2006 to 2011. Prior to those roles, Mr. Sarnoff served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Random House, a subsidiary of Bertelsmann. Mr. Sarnoff also served as a member of the supervisory board of Bertelsmann from 2002 to 2008 and served as a member of the board of directors of Activision Blizzard from 2005 to 2015, The Princeton Review from 2000 to 2009, of Audible from 2001 to 2008 and of Amdocs from 2009 to 2011. Mr. Sarnoff currently serves on the board of directors of several privately held companies. Mr. Sarnoff holds a B.A. in Art and Archeology from Princeton University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Ted Schlein

General Partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers

Ted Schlein brings extensive experience working with early-stage technology companies in the infrastructure markets, including ventures within the network arena, and has served on our board of directors since December 2008. Mr. Schlein has served as a General Partner of Kleiner Perkins, a venture capital firm since November 1996. From 1986 to 1996, Mr. Schlein served in various executive positions at Symantec Corporation, a provider of Internet security technology and business management technology solutions, including as Vice President of Enterprise Products. Mr. Schlein currently serves on the boards of directors for a number of privately held companies. Mr. Schlein holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Jed York

Chief Executive Officer, San Francisco 49ers

Jed York brings his extensive leadership experience and strong corporate development background, and has served on our board of directors since June 2013. Since February 2012, Mr. York has served as the Chief Executive Officer of the San Francisco 49ers, a professional football team in the National Football League, where he previously served as Team President from 2008 to 2012 and as Vice President of Strategic Planning from 2005 to 2008. Prior to those roles, Mr. York served as a financial analyst at Guggenheim Partners. Mr. York holds a B.A. in finance from the University of Notre Dame.

Melanie Whelan

Managing Director, Summit Partners

Melanie Whelan has served on our Board of Directors since June 2019. Ms. Whelan serves as a Managing Director at Summit Partners, a private equity investment firm, since June 2020 and served as an Executive in Residence from January 2020 to June 2020. Previously, Ms. Whelan has served as Chief Executive Officer of SoulCycle Inc., an indoor cycling fitness company, from June 2015 to November 2019 and as Chief Operating Officer from April 2012 until May 2015. Prior to joining SoulCycle, Ms. Whelan was Vice President of Business Development at Equinox Holdings, Inc., a luxury fitness company, from January 2007 to April 2012. Prior to Equinox, she also held leadership positions with Virgin Management, where she was on the founding team of Virgin America, and with Starwood Hotels & Resorts, a hospitality company. Ms. Whelan holds a B.A. in Engineering and Economics from Brown University.

Dr. Paul LeBlanc

Chairperson

Dr. Paul J. LeBlanc is President of Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). Under the 17 years of Paul’s direction, SNHU has grown from 2,800 students to over 170,000 learners and is the largest non-profit provider of online higher education in the country. Paul serves on the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI) and on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s Board on Higher Education and Workforce. In 2018, Paul was awarded the prestigious TIAA Institute Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence in Higher Education. Paul immigrated to the United States as a child, was the first person in his extended family to attend college and is a graduate of Framingham State University (BA), Boston College (MA), and the University of Massachusetts (PhD). From 1993 to 1996 he directed a technology start up for Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company, was President of Marlboro College (VT) from 1996 to 2003 and became President of SNHU in 2003.

Ann Kirschner

Professor, The City University of New York and Board Member

Dr. Ann Kirschner is an educator, board member, consultant, and writer. As University Professor at The City University of New York, she teaches and writes about innovation and higher education. She is an independent board member of the Movado Group, Noodle, and Strategic Cyber Ventures, and co-chair of the Princeton University Graduate School Advisory Council. She was the co-founding director of the Women in Technology and Entrepreneurship (WiTNY) initiative at CUNY and Cornell Tech. She is the author of Sala’s Gift and Lady at the OK Corral, and is currently a contributor to Forbes.

Paul Kim

CTO and Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Education, Stanford University

Dr. Paul Kim is the Chief Technology Officer and Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University. An education technology entrepreneur, Dr. Kim leads initiatives involving the design of learning technologies, educational research, and community development. He has served as an advisor to Asia Development Bank, National Science Foundation, and numerous education innovation committees of multiple nations including Saudi Arabia, U.A.E., Oman, Vietnam, and South Korea. He founded Seeds of Empowerment, a non-profit global development organization, and its education projects such as 1001 Stories and SMILE (Stanford Mobile Inquiry-based Learning Environment) have received numerous recognitions and awards from international organizations such as United Nations. His book publications include “MOOC Revolution,” “Coaching, not Teaching,” “Culture Engineering,” and “New Equilibrium.”

Dana Born

Faculty Chair, Faculty Advisor, and Lecturer, Harvard Kennedy School of Government

Dr. Dana Born is Faculty Chair of the Senior Executive Fellows Program, Faculty Advisor of the Black Family Fellowship, and Lecturer in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She is a retired Brigadier General with 30 years of service in the United States Air Force. Prior to coming to Harvard, from 2004-2013, she served two terms as the Dean of the Faculty at the United States Air Force Academy, where she was also the Professor and Head of the Behavioral Sciences and Leadership Department.
