Academic Integrity

Upholding academic integrity

Academic integrity is fundamental to the learning process and core to our mission. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated many ongoing challenges in education, including how students are assessed and how they use online resources. We recognize the potential for misuse of any online platform and we take seriously any attempts to cheat or otherwise misuse Chegg Services.

What we do & don't do

Thumps Up Icon Chegg does:

  • Enforce our Honor Code Policy with technology and human support.
  • Prompt users to follow our Honor Code when they access our tools.
  • Cooperate with official school Honor Code investigations.
  • Train our dedicated experts to spot and flag potential cheating.
  • Review potential violations and take action that ranges from a written warning to full account termination.
  • Respond to requests to remove copyrighted material quickly.
  • Limit the number of questions a user can ask per month.
  • Restrict account sharing between subscribers.

Thumbs Down Icon Chegg does not:

  • Allow users to ask multiple questions at once.
  • Allow peer-to-peer content sharing on the platform.
  • Allow anyone but a Chegg Expert to provide question responses.

Honor ShieldTM

The COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to rapidly shift exams online and made it more difficult for many students to access academic support. In recognition of the sudden and widespread move to un-proctored, online exams, we built the proctoring support tool, Honor Shield, with input and guidance from faculty and Academic Integrity administrators. Honor Shield helps faculty protect exam integrity and explicitly prevents students from abusing the platform during an exam. It works by blocking exam questions during designated assessment periods.

If you have questions about Honor Shield, please contact faculty@chegg.com.

Tips & Guidance

Tips for Educators

Modern students have access to an unprecedented number of resources. Our online learning tools are designed to support students’ learning and supplement classroom instruction. However, what is considered acceptable use by one professor may not be okay with another. We encourage clear communication on what is considered acceptable use of online resources in your course.

Setting Clear Expectations

  1. Be explicit about what tools you consider appropriate for use in your class.
  2. Define how resources should be cited.
  3. Clarify what is permissible and under what circumstances – for example, during an “open book test”.

Tips for Students

Exploring the wealth of resources available online can be overwhelming. Our tools are designed to support students’ learning, and acceptable use of online resources may vary from class to class. Always check if using Chegg is considered an acceptable resource for your course. Chegg resources are intended to support—not replace—your work and what you are learning.

Maintaining Your Academic Integrity

  1. Cite your sources and acknowledge other people’s work.
  2. When in doubt, ask. Discuss use of Chegg with your professors and confirm what is allowed and when.
  3. Online tools can be used for self-study and homework help. Apply what you’ve learned and submit your own original work.
  4. In most cases, Chegg resources are not appropriate for use during exams. Check with your professor first.

We are open to hearing your feedback as we work together on improving this process. Learn more

  • Why are my students using Chegg?

Students use Chegg because we provide accessible resources that are online, affordable, and available 24 hours a day. Our content is created by carefully selected subject experts, and our tools are designed to support self-study through step-by-step instruction, videos, tutoring, and more. Chegg’s content may help students reinforce material learned in the classroom or get ahead by learning about and practicing similar problems and topics. Learn more

  • I think the content that I created has been uploaded to Chegg inappropriately. How am I supposed to find it without an account?

Our catalog is open to the public. The search function is available to anyone, with or without a subscription. Solutions are only available to those with a subscription. However, we are committed to enforcing our Honor Code and will assist any academic institution that submits an investigation request. Learn more

  • How do I start an Honor Code investigation?

If you believe there has been an Honor Code violation, please complete the Honor Code Violation form. Learn more

  • I’m an educator and my content has been posted on Chegg without my permission. How do I get that removed?

Uploading content or intellectual property without the owner’s permission is against our Terms of Use. Please read Chegg’s copyright policy. If you suspect your content has been posted without permission, please complete our copyright takedown request form. If you want to initiate an academic integrity investigation for your school, please complete our academic investigation request form.

  • Why can’t you tell me more information about users who are violating your Honor Code?

We cooperate with official academic conduct investigations to the fullest extent possible under our Terms of Use, privacy policy, and applicable privacy laws.

  • Why can’t you delay your responses to every question?

We believe students are seeking on-demand help to get unstuck, and they think they deserve to get the help they need when they need it most. Delaying answers across our site would hurt more students than it would help. And yet, we’ve heard the concerns of academia and are working to do our part to solve the problem. It’s why we created a new proctoring support tool, Honor Shield, that allows faculty to pre-submit exam questions to be blocked during designated assessment periods. Honor Shield allows faculty to gain more control over the integrity of their exams and protects students from violating our Honor Code and their school’s academic integrity policies.
